For gay men, Fort Lauderdale is synonymous with its seven miles of town beach, which is so long that, despite its many visitors, seems occasionally empty and deserted. The beach here is more of a place to relax in and chill rather than party.

There are two separate sections within the long town beach where gay men congregate: at the end of Sebastian St and at the end of Terramar St. As befits a gay-friendly city, however, none of these spots are exclusively gay.

Intriguingly, the focus of gay life is inland in the suburb of Wilton Manors, where many of the gay clubs and restaurants are bunched. It takes about 15 minutes from Terramar St or Sebastian St to Wilton Manors.

How to get there

You generally need a car to move around in Fort Lauderdale and the beaches are along Highway A1A. However, there is also several red-and-yellow 'Sun Trolleys' that run up and down the beach. There are no designated stops so if you see one coming your way wave it down and tell the driver where you want to be dropped off. Last updated: 03-13-2014
